What is it like living in Rocinha?

One thing I’ve been noticing is that a lot of people don’t really know what it’s like to live in Rocinha. Many people think it’s very dangerous, that there are police operations all the time, that everyone who lives there does bad things… but it’s not like that. A lot of people still have the wrong idea about life in there, and that’s why I feel very happy to see that there are several influencers who live there and make videos showing the reality, and there are many of them. It’s not like on TV, where they only show the violence.

One of my favorite influencers who talks about life in Rocinha and is actually a resident is Danrley, who explains very well what his life there is like. Take a look:

And there are many other videos, with several different themes, showing places to visit, where to eat, where to buy things, where you should or shouldn’t walk… there’s no way to get lost.

Some tips and useful information for anyone who wants to visit Rocinha

  • For those thinking of living there, Rocinha has some of the cheapest rents in Rio de Janeiro and is located between the most expensive neighborhoods, which are: Gávea, Leblon, and São Conrado.

  • The lower down in the favela you stay, the easier your transportation options will be. Otherwise, Uber/taxis will drop you off at the bottom and you’ll have to continue on foot.

  • Visit the Mirante restaurant. You’ll have an amazing view from up there, you’ll be able to see the entire favela and Christ the Redeemer, as well as enjoy a wonderful meal.

  • On your first day, hire a guide. It’s not expensive and it will save you a lot of time.
