Could DayZ 2 be on the way? Trademark registration reignites rumors about a sequel to the survival game

A new rumor is making waves: DayZ 2 may be in development. The speculation arose after the discovery of a trademark filing (currently under review, at the time of this post) for the name “DayZ 2” in the European Union, which quickly caught the attention of fans of the famous zombie survival game, which hasn’t had a sequel since its release in 2013.

The information appeared on the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, known for tracking industry leaks and movements. According to the post, the trademark was allegedly filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) — the body responsible for patents and trademarks within the European Union.

This type of filing often happens when companies want to secure the rights to a name before officially announcing a project, which led many players to believe that a sequel to the game may be in the works.

The legacy of DayZ

Originally created as a mod for ARMA 2 (in April 2012), DayZ quickly became a phenomenon within the survival genre. The success was so great that the project became a standalone game developed by Bohemia Interactive 1 year and 8 months later, in December 2013, cementing its reputation as one of the most immersive multiplayer survival games on the market.

With a brutal open world, scarce resources, and unpredictable player interactions, DayZ helped popularize the online survival genre — influencing several other titles that came after, such as Rust, SCUM, etc.

Rumor, but with potential

Despite the community’s excitement, it’s important to remember that a trademark filing does not officially confirm the development of a game. Companies frequently register names to protect intellectual property or reserve ideas for future projects. Just like was the case with Star Wars 1313 and Agent (by Rockstar).

Even so, the mere existence of a possible DayZ 2 is enough to reignite discussions among fans, who imagine a sequel with next-gen graphics, deeper survival mechanics, and more stable servers.

For now, everything remains in the realm of rumors — but if the project does exist, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more clues emerge in the coming months.
