When Square Enix moves one of its successful franchises, the impact on the community is immediate. This time, the Japanese giant has announced a new Final Fantasy game scheduled for release as early as 2026, rekindling fans’ expectations for the beloved RPG.
Instead of consoles and PC, Final Fantasy is now gaining ground beyond screens with Final Fantasy: The Board Game. The release is an official board game, developed in partnership with KessCo, that goes back to the series’ roots by adapting Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, and Final Fantasy III into an immersive, social experience that’s much quicker to play away from the screen.
The proposal is straightforward: take everything that made the classics so iconic—character progression, strategic decisions, and exploration—and turn it into dynamic matches designed for groups of friends. To round out the package, the game also brings collectible dice inspired by the Pixel Remaster visual style, a detail made for the audience that grew up playing the classics.
It’s the kind of extra that doesn’t affect gameplay, but makes all the difference in sentimental appeal for fans, such as creating new memories to the sound of Nobuo Uematsu’s epic soundtrack. On the other hand, the project shows that Square Enix wants to keep the franchise in the spotlight in various ways. Thus, betting on alternative formats backed by the weight of the Final Fantasy name helps reach a younger audience that consumes quick, shareable, and unconventional experiences.
For now, the price and exact date have not been revealed, but the release is expected to arrive before the end of the year. In addition, this focus on the classics also raises another interesting possibility: the chance of new Final Fantasy remakes in the near future.
Nothing has been confirmed so far, but the company’s recent track record shows that revisiting its greatest hits has been a sure bet.
