Is a VPN really necessary to play online multiplayer?

I’ve seen several companies offering special VPNs for gamers. But I don’t get why there are so many offers. A VPN is to mask your IP, right? So then, what would a professional actually do with something as simple as your IP? Hack your PC? Operating systems nowadays already come with a lot of built‑in protection, which is enough in my opinion. Nobody would waste time hacking some random person’s PC on the internet, right? I know there’s also the fact that the person can know which city you’re in. But who cares if you’re playing from Xique-Xique?

Does anyone here only game with a VPN? I’d like to know what the point is.

doesn’t that make the connection a lot slower? it must make the ping really high. unless the VPN is Brazilian, I don’t know. I don’t understand this stuff and I wouldn’t pay. I guess this thing must be around 20 reais a month?
