What do you think of Linux for gaming?

Is it a good idea to install Linux for gaming?

I’ve been seeing a lot of builds that already come with Linux installed, gamer configs with graphics cards and so on. Another big example of this is SteamOS. I’d like to know why so many companies are getting into this now. What are the advantages of playing games on Linux instead of Windows 11? By the way, in Windows 11 there’s an option to optimize for games during installation, right?

I remember that some time ago when I used Ubuntu, I had to install a program to install Windows stuff and be able to run something. Would that still be the case today?

And by the way, what do you prefer in a gamer context? Windows or Linux?

I still prefer Windows, but the Linux distribution called Garuda surprised me. I really liked the experience. I was able to play all the games I tested (including WoW), just with a loss of 10 to 15 fps compared to Windows. I only had to learn how to choose the right version of Proton.

Nice, but do you need to install anything to run it? I think the program’s name was Winvine, or something like that.

The gamer edition of Garuda comes with everything you need, including Steam, Wine and Proton. So, for most games, you’ll just install them as you always do on Steam and you’ll be ready to play. What happened to me is that I needed to update the system after installation to download the most recent compatibility apps.
I had a few other minor issues that were easy to fix. That’s why I recommend Garuda as a gaming platform only for enthusiasts.

The problems that might come up aren’t hard to solve, but they can be a bit patience‑draining.
