Thinking about buying the whole Resident Evil franchise before trying Requiem

The hype around this Resident Evil Requiem was huge, and even though I’ve never played any game from the Resident Evil series because I’m a scaredy-cat, I actually liked this one, because it’s not that scary. The problem is, since I’ve never played them, I don’t know anything about the story. Like, I know nothing about Umbrella, who Leon is, whether he’s dating that blonde girl or not, who her mother is, the story of the bosses, etc.

Is it really important to know all of that, or can I just start with Requiem and still have fun?

Or is it better to start from their first games?

I saw that those older ones aren’t expensive.

Dude, Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 are different from 4, 5, 6, and 7. Even though they recycle characters, the games themselves are different. You don’t need to follow the order to enjoy the game. For example, for this Requiem, it’s enough to have played 7 and 8 to understand the story. I’m saying this because even if the names are similar, the games themselves are different.
