Ubisoft continues to move things behind the scenes of Assassin’s Creed, but not all the news has excited fans of the franchise. The cooperative multiplayer content that was being developed by Ubisoft Annecy for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been officially canceled.
According to a recent report from Origami Media, the project known internally as “League” was to be released as DLC integrated into the game’s Season Pass. The content would have focused on cooperative missions set in feudal Japan, with up to four assassins at the same time.
However, the idea was halted after a strategic reassessment to establish higher standards. The people in charge concluded that development would require more time than expected to reach the desired level of quality, which resulted in the cancellation of the additional content.
Despite this, rumors indicate that the initial concept has not been completely discarded by the developer. They are reportedly considering using League’s foundation in a cooperative multiplayer game, still inspired by Shadows, preserving the collaborative idea in a less ambitious format.
It seems the future is already secured for the franchise’s next few years, as among so many projects, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is one of the most promising. The new title is set in the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th‑century witch hunts. In the story, players control Elsa, a mysterious protagonist who apparently has magical powers.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
