Today we know that Rockstar was working on a continuation for that version, but it was abandoned.
By all indications, Rockstar’s plans were to have a GTA in each part of the globe, because in 2003, right after releasing GTA 3, they registered trademarks for GTA Tokyo, GTA Sin City and GTA Bogotá.
In fact, in 2023, traces of GTA Tokyo’s code were found.
Tokyo was one of the cities we wanted in the game at that time, because it seemed like a cool and interesting city. All that was missing was a team to map the city and build the story in terms of culture. (Former Rockstar team member)
It’s sad that they abandoned the project. I still dream of a GTA in Rio de Janeiro. Without mods.
